10 things you need to know about digital artist yuyi john

Discover 10 things about Yuyi John, the multidisciplinary artist with an imagination that knows no bounds.

Born and raised in Taiwan, Yuyi John is the digital artist whose childlike imagination sees her making art with no limits; think instant noodles accessories and USB shoelaces and you get the picture. Although she studied fashion design and upon graduating spent time in New York to apply herself to highly sought after fashion roles, Yuyi decided to follow her own natural energies which led her to focus on her true passion of creating whimsical designs. Her virtually led art unsurprisingly takes inspiration from social media, with a recent project seeing her imprinting a series of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram themed images onto faces. Everyday objects such as food, technology and the versatile canvas of the human body are transformed into confounding works of art, each conveying both the workings of Yuyi's mind and her underlying message: there are no rules. Here are 10 things you should know about her.

1

Being president was just one of her childhood dreams.

I had so many dreams as a child - I wanted to be a doctor in kindergarten, later a singer and female president in elementary school. By the time I was in high school, I realised that fashion was the world I wanted to be in. But after graduation, I discovered a growing passion for being a surgeon, modern dance artist and legislator grew

2

She is a self-proclaimed social-media-addict.

I used to love Facebook, but it's getting boring which is probably I prefer something more challenging. I love the concept of visual presentation of Instagram.

3

One of her biggest regrets is failing to be a volleyball player.

I used to play it every single day regardless of lessons or time back in high school, but since going to college no one was willing to get their hands or dress dirty so there was no one to play with – and it's a team sport, after all.

4

She cannot forget the scent of her ex-boyfriend.

He broke my heart and gave me a lesson that I need to count on myself, both mentally and physically.

5

If she was to give advice to herself 10 years ago it would be:

Don't care about what people say. Don't be afraid of bullies and be nice. You will soon be free to be yourself. Don't hate yourself for not getting into the high school you wanted, you'll eventually be admitted to Shih Chien University and the days there will be some of the best days of your life!

6

One of her biggest hopes is to learn how to handle her emotions properly.

I want myself to be able to control emotions, learn to let things go and be a calm person. Farewell, depression

7

Her favourite movie character is:

Faye in Chungking Express

8

She feels good in...

Something dashing, like trousers from 90s.

9

She has a very special party trick:

I can balance a broom on my chin, it’s something I've been able to do since high school. I’m also good at guessing people's star sign!

10

If she had to be a character in a movie it’d be an assassin.

Carrying two guns, the highly skilled type.
