enter the intimate realm of wen jun

Get to know the work of Wen Jun, the untrained Shanghai-based artist whose form of self-expression remains fresh and alive through photography, paint and music.

In 2009, photographer, painter and singer Wen Jun was the lead vocalist in Guaili, the post-punk band and gang of best friends who often performed, played and lived together. During this period, Wen began to document Guaili through an unfiltered lens, the results being an honest and intimate look at the daily lives of the adolescents in the underground post-punk scene in China’s capital city. Since many members of the group came from one-child families, the experience was truly unifying in the way it created an unbreakable bond that remains in place despite the band disbanding. Now based in Shanghai, Wen continues to express herself through the mediums of photography and paint, with close friends still providing inspiration for much of her work. Music remains integral to Wen’s life, yet as a reflection of the internal and external changes the sound is now softer and more mellow, as opposed to the aggressive punk sound from her Guaili days. Learning her practice instinctively - through personal interest and without previous training - means that Wen’s work remains to be distinguishable and a wholly honest insight into her and her world.
