Filmmakers Zaiba Jabbar, Margot Bowman, and Gemma Lacey, associate editor of independent zine Puss Puss, decided to challenge male dominance in the art world by setting up the female-focused project Hervisions. The necessity of all-female communities and collectives remains to be as essential as ever since the stark and overwhelming presence of males to females in the media and arts world is no new news; feminist art collective Guerrilla Girls serve as exemplary to the cause, having dedicated the past three decades to challenging the lack of female coverage in the art world with their active demonstrations that remain as vocal today.
The fundamentals of Hervisions is to serve as a platform for women to empower others through showcasing work created from a female point of view. Collaborators span the disciplines of art, photography, and film, with events combining screenings, panel discussions and a physical space for female creators to come together.
Created for The Fifth Sense, the following three images on the unconscious power of intuition explore how women develop, project and maintain their intuitive powers. Here Zaiba talks us through each of them.
Anny Wang
"Anny Wang’s Tropical Bonanza takes a look at what she calls ‘unconscious thoughts and unexpected discoveries’. The animated peaches create patterns as they split and reveal their insides. Annie is interested in the way past experiences can trigger reactions to the new, with beautiful and surprising outcomes."
Sam Cannon
"Sam Cannon’s work is a fluid, sensual piece which looks at the palpability of female intuition. The three semi-submerged figures are a meditation on the power of women to share information and pass it on. In referencing the trope of maiden, mother, and crone so prevalent in mythology and religion, the use of liquid is designed to evoke the inherently female concepts of comfort, birth and transition."
Sophie Rogers
"Sophie Rogers piece JN-5’s Duty takes it’s lead from the Isaac Asimov’s Feminine Intuition, a story that sees uncontrollable behaviour in a robot being deemed intuitive and feminine by default. Roger’s musings led her to ask if intuition is real – her work sees her contrast the ‘delicate fragments of female intuition against the undefinable vastness of space.'"
