five senses from my world: ellie rowsell, musican

From sounds to satellites and seasons, find out five definitive sensual moments from musician Ellie Rowsell's world.

A poster girl icon for the 21st century, Ellie Rowsell is the lead singer in the London-based Grammy Award nominee indie rock band Wolf Alice. Like the tale by Angela Carter that inspired the bands name - a short story about a girl raised by wolves that develops the consciousness of a human being as she grows in her self-awareness - Wolf Alice’s debut album My Love Is Cool explores universal coming of age themes; alienation, adjusting to adolescence and ultimately trying to find comfort in your own skin while doing so.

Jeff Buckley is one of my favourite artists.

His music always makes me feel nostalgic, curious and emotional and his vocal range and ability as a singer really inspire me. Grace was one of my favourite albums as a teen.

2

People trying to tell a story through their own laughter is the most infectiously joyful sound ever.

When the tears start streaming and they start clutching their stomach and they just can't get the words out because something was that funny – it’s such a pleasure to watch.

3

I think that a full moon has supernatural powers.

In literature the full moon is always considered quite supernatural, how could that moonlight glow not feel ominous! My girlfriends and I always blame our weird moods and actions on the moon.

4

If I could choose one season to continue all year, it’d be summer.

Autumn and spring are beautiful and winter is cosy, but summer would be great because the sun makes everyone happy and I like getting my legs out.

A perfume I wore as a teenager transports me back to that time every time I smell it -

going out, having fun, being confused and worried about who I was and what I was doing.
